I am a Licensed Social Worker specializing in individual and relational counseling. My private practice is conveniently located at 23 Central Boulevard in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania.
I am a graduate of The University of Maryland School of Social Work. The focus of my clinical practice is the Internal Family Systems model of therapy developed by Richard Schwartz. This model states that once we come to understand and get into relationship with our "internal system," we can heal what may prove to be long standing "wounded or burdened" parts of ourselves. When this internal shifting occurs, the results seem magical. In addition to using this in my practice, I train other therapists in how to use the model. Among my areas of expertise are clients who are dealing with depression, anxiety, PTSD, trauma, and addictive behaviors.
For more than 20 years, I ran an adventure program for teenagers. In addition to the daily outdoor activities, the program also introduced them to using communication skills in new and more effective ways. This element of the program was developed by my sister-in-law Chris Mathna who was an IFS therapist at Awakenings for the past 15 years. It was her inspiration, mentoring, and encouragement that led me into my practice.
When I am not with clients, I enjoy working outside at our home in Perry County; spending time with my two children, Chris age 19 and Julie age 16; and my wife Merry of 25 years. Of course our yellow lab Willie is never far away.
The coast of Maine has been my spiritual retreat since I was a young boy. For the past several summers, I have been able to return to Maine for short stints in order to work as a sternman on the Mollie B, a commercial lobster boat fishing out of Castine. This time has served to rejuvenate me and bring new insight and perspective to my practice.
